NavPak is primarily the Marine version of OziExplorer. The ability to import images or maps and then navigate with them is the prime purpose of NavPak. However, it is also being used to navigate for the purpose of Aircraft and Land Navigation. It's capabilities are expansive and we find this product extremely intuitive and versatile.
Some land ECS programs claim to be marine ECS programs too, but lack many of the necessary tools and features a navigator needs. Can the program be used if the GPS goes dead? Are charts available for where I'm going? Can the program be used with a sextant? Can the program be utilized with marine equipment such as a handbearing compass and/or radio direction finder? NavPak can do all the above-mentioned.

GlobeNav NavPak Pro Edition
This software stands out by itself in many ways, including the ability to look at several ports so that the software can "observe" the data from various navigation instruments.
NavPak comes with MapSetup, which is a program that allows NavPak users to scan and calibrate their own charts and maps. It will work on everything from street maps to satellite photos. It comes with the ability to calibrate up to 96 points of reference. Many shareware / ECS programs that have similar capabilities, only cater from 3 to 12 points of reference. This is not adequate because all the source charts were hand-drawn in previous centuries and tend to be out-of-square, and the projection parameters are generally not known. Most charts require 18 to 24 reference points at least. As you add more reference points using MapSetup, the tolerances tighten so that the grid on the chart accurately georeferences. If you are using commercial chart formats, then they are already geo-referenced and it is not necessary to use MapSetup.
