If you are looking for GPS that slots into or connects via cable and or wireless please choose the following GPS Types to work with PDAs, BluetoothSerial/PS2 Mouse, CF Card and SD.  A special adapter is optional with the Serial/PS2 Mouse to allow you to connect to your specific PDA.   If you can't find the optional cable just send us an email with details of your PDA and we will assist.

PDA GPS

The list below are the brands of PDAs with built-in GPS.  If you find the specifications of these PDAs are not to your liking then we suggest you look at the individual Pocket PC (PDA) items.  If you have an idea of what you want to do with the GPS system then let us quote you the options available.  Please give as much information so we can provide the best solution for your needs.

What do I need to know to help me make a decision?

The proliferation of PDA based GPS has shown the realisation by buyers that dedicated GPS doesn't have the flexibility for the price. For example, Garmin produce a dedicated street navigating GPS for around the $900 mark or more.  Imagine for the same price you can add marine navigation, or listen to music, games, create or read documents and spreadsheets, view photos and lots more.  In fact, Garmin have finally realised that dedicated street navigating GPS are not favoured as much as PDA GPS by producing a series of their own PDA GPS.  But PDAs are not all the same and this is where you will clearly see why the least or most expensive PDA GPS may prove to be a bad choice.

Like any product with variety, you pay for what you get.  We tend to have a belief, the cheapest won't cut the cake whilst the dearest often are because of the name.  Albeit Navman have a very good price range we won't say they are the “be all end all” of PDA GPS, because, they are not.  Let's get into the nitty gritty.

We often find that some PDA GPS manufacturers sell on price not on specifications; meaning, you see a price but you are not told what's inside.  It's true that 90% of buyers know very little of what's inside the box and don't care to know, they just want to know if it is going to do what they want it to do.  Imagine if you are travelling along a freeway and you missed your turn, the PDA takes 10 seconds to recalculate to get you to your destination and it calculated for you to take a turn that you passed 5 seconds before.  Imagine if you had a PDA with a high performance computer chip that recalculated within a second, you then can take the turn rather than having to travel another 5 kilometres.  That's not good if you are trying to get to a destination in time for a party, a job interview or meeting in a locality you have never been to before.

Ok, so we have made it clear the computer chip (Often a Samsung or Intel) has to be a performer and the current crop of PDA GPS range in processor speeds of 266 MHz and up to 416 MHz.  Thus, the faster the processor the quicker you can expect a recalculation of your route.

Next is the GPS engine, it too must be able to perform its duties or else it will keep telling you it is unable to find any satellites.  You don't need to know about this except be aware the most popular GPS manufacturer in the world (Garmin) have switched to a USA company called SiRF, from their own manufactured GPS engine.  In the GPS world that is the biggest coup any GPS engine manufacturer could ever attain.  In fact 90% of all GPS recreational manufacturers use SiRF GPS engines.  The most recent addition to the SiRF line-up is the SiRF III.  Another GPS engine that is of exceptional capability is the SiRF III’s predecessor, the SiRF II with Xtrac.

Next time you read up on a PDA GPS consider these two very important items as we have on many occasions found that PDA GPS without detailed specifications hide them because they don’t want you to know it was built on price and not performance.

Out of those listed below the only one with the highest processor speed and SiRF III GPS engine is the Holux NAV60 and yet is mid priced.
