All Notebooks/Laptops have the PCMCIA Slot (often located on the left side of the Notebook) and this is where the CF Card GPS slots into with the use of a CF to PCMCIA Adapter.
There are so many brands to choose from; you either have an idea what brand you want or the facility to connect an external antenna if need be. You may even want the option to use it as a mouse type GPS by connecting it to a Notebook or PDA via a supplied or optional cable. Not all CF Card GPS have these options capability but will not affect performance if you don't. Exception to this is a lack of satellites then the facility to connect an external antenna is mandetory.
CF card GPS is mostly sort after by people using a PDA rather than a notebook because they can easily walk around with the PDA and the CF Card GPS slotted into the top slot. Notebook users prefer the USB mouse type GPS. Older Notebooks with Windows 95 or Windows 98 First Edition you may need to update the Operating System to XP or the latest version or just the USB drivers for USB Mouse GPS. The same goes for PDA OS where you will need to update them. If you have the current PocketPC OS in your PDA you should have no problems, however with Windows CE you are most likely going to need to get the latest patch update.
