Low cost Vehicle or Fleet Tracking GPS devices utilise the mobile phone network (GSM) by transmitting the information through the GSM network in data packets. Unlike Voice, which uses the voice services of the GSM, data is transfered via the GPRS service. There is a cost associated with GPRS where the cost is based on the transfer of data but not on time (off hook) like voice is.
To access the vehicle position information using GSM it is sent to a device such as your mobile phone or to your computer. There are two methods in gaining the data to your PC, via a specialised modem with the fleet management software on your PC or via the internet that you can access the information. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
